Our Mission

We serve by caring for and enriching the lives of others because all deserve respect, dignity, and quality of life.

Our Story

Dunlop House is a family-owned senior care community with deep ties and rich history in Colonial Heights. Built on a stretch of land that was once a thriving dairy farm, our community is beautiful both inside and out. The rural setting is quiet and welcoming, yet still convenient to the greater Tri-Cities area—just one of the many things that families love about living here.

1990’s

Henry “Hank” Pierce was a prominent builder, developer and civic leader in Petersburg for more than 50 years, building homes, apartments, offices and stores throughout the Tri-Cities. Following his passing in 1992, his wife and sons came together to purchase a tract of land that once pastured the milk cows for the historic Dunlop Dairy. The land is green and scenic, nestled behind Colonial Christian Church and the local fire department. It is close to shopping, healthcare and more in Colonial Heights, a residential setting that spoke to its future use.

At the time, there was little access to Assisted Living and almost no options for seniors in need of specialized Memory Care. A fact that was top-of-mind for a group of spouses from U.S. Army Garrison Fort Lee, who approached the Family early in the development process while looking for a place to spend their golden years as they and their husbands grew older. Dunlop House broke ground in 1998, beginning our rich history of caring for the Colonial Heights senior community.

1999

The Dunlop House opened its doors in 1999 as the first Assisted Living community serving the Colonial Heights area with 75 units and an Alzheimer’s center, the precursor to the Memory Care community added in 2007.

2007

In 2007, Dunlop House broke ground on an additional 46 units in a dedicated Memory Care neighborhood, nearly doubling its size. The new wing features self-contained, indoor and outdoor spaces, more-intimate common areas and increased security features to protect Memory Care residents.
